In spite of Cecchini's enthusiasm, Cynthia Whitham, associate director of the UCLA Parenting Program, adds a note of caution. "If you're used to two incomes, you'll have to decide if you want to make do on one income or if you will both go back to work, and deal with childcare," she says. "It's crucial to think about such issues ahead of time, and decide how you are going to share parental responsibility."

Second-chance Family
When Kathy Bowman, 35, met and married her husband, Joe, the situation was a little different. Bowman, from California, was the mother of a 12-year-old from a former marriage. The couple knew right away that they wanted to have children, but were concerned about how Bowman's daughter, Valerie, would take to having another child in the house. "Especially since she and Joe get along really well, as if she was his child," says Bowman. "I was worried in case Val suddenly felt like a stepchild But now that Valerie has two siblings...she loves them."
