So Long to Soy During Conception?
Some Studies Cast a Shadow of Doubt on Soy and Fertility
By Teri Brown
Last year, a study conducted by Professor Lynn Fraser of King's College London questioned soy's affect on male fertility as well. Oestrogen, a female hormone found in soy, has been linked with poor quality sperm, a suggestion that Chapman also refutes. "It is unfortunate that the recently reported results of a test tube [experiment] have been interpreted as having an impact on human reproduction," says Chapman in a press release.
Karl K. Rozman, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Pharmacology, Toxicology and Therapeutics at the University of Kansas Medical Center and a member of the panel, says women should not be alarmed. "I don't think that eating a lot of soy food would effect conception one way or another," he says. "However, it is always worthwhile to change your habits if you have difficulties conceiving. Therefore, a woman should cut soy food down or entirely out for a while. If she still doesn't conceive, at least she will know that it had nothing to do with soy.
Still, the question remains: Can the genistein in soy cause reproductive issues? More studies are needed in order for women to make educated decisions. For now, as in everything, common sense and moderation are key.
