A Weighty Issue for Conception

Trying to Conceive When You're Clinically Overweight

The thing is, no matter how hard you try, weight loss might not come easy or even at all. What then? Are you doomed to be childless?

"We see and deliver a big number of overweight women who most of the time conceive without difficulty," says Dr. Marcos Pupkin, an obstetrician and gynecologist at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, Md.

And what about those women who have hormonal imbalances that are affecting ovulation? They just might find their miracle in a bottle. "Medications to induce ovulation can also improve the chances of conception in women with weight disorders who are not ovulatory," Dr. Chasen says.

In the real world, women do not wait for the numbers on the scale to drop before they become pregnant. Whether or not this is wise often takes a back seat to the overwhelming lure of motherhood.

French does her best to make sense out of these strong emotions. "Being overweight, whether pregnant or not, is hard on us," she says. "Being pregnant, whether overweight or not, is hard on us. Both conditions deplete our energy, make it more difficult to do things and give us extra aches and pains. I don't know if combining the two makes it doubly hard or not, but I think the best advice I could give to anyone experiencing either one or both at the same time is to keep in touch with the doctor and follow all their suggestions or orders as well as they can."
