Legal Source

Adoption.org recommends Nolo's Encyclopedia of Everyday Law (NOLO, 2005) as a source for basic questions on adoption.

Lynn A.* from Golden Valley, Minn., and her husband opted for an international adoption. They had concerns with health issues due to alcohol and drugs in domestic adoption. They were referred to a single provider, hoping that process would be faster. They felt both the provider and the South American country from which they adopted hid health history that would have helped them in the first few years. They discovered their child suffered from prenatal malnutrition. Their provider eventually had her license revoked because she did not always adhere to the rules set by the countries in which she arranged adoptions.

Lynn recommends adopting parents use an agency that has an infrastructure including pre- and post-adoption counseling. Looking back, she feels his would have been a tremendous help and something they had not considered before beginning the process.
