At Your Cervix
A Lifetime of Cervical Health
By Shel Franco
As with any part of your anatomy, abnormalities can occur. According to Dr. Nardone, some disorders of the cervix that can occur in any women as well as pregnant women include:

- Cervical dysplasia is a "precancerous" condition of the cells on the cervix and can be detected with the Pap smear and if necessary a biopsy.
- Cervical cancer is carcinoma of the cervix, which can be detected with a Pap smear but must be followed up with a biopsy as well as definitive treatment.
- Cervical polyps are small, tongue-like projections that grow out from the cervical os. These are usually benign but can cause abnormal bleeding which can be distressing to women. They are usually easily removed.
- Cervical cysts occur on the cervix and are usually benign. They are often filled with mucus or sebaceous material.
- Cervicitis is an inflammation of the cervix, possibly from a vaginal infection and or an STD.
