As with any part of your anatomy, abnormalities can occur. According to Dr. Nardone, some disorders of the cervix that can occur in any women as well as pregnant women include:

  • Cervical dysplasia is a "precancerous" condition of the cells on the cervix and can be detected with the Pap smear and if necessary a biopsy.
  • Cervical cancer is carcinoma of the cervix, which can be detected with a Pap smear but must be followed up with a biopsy as well as definitive treatment.
  • Cervical polyps are small, tongue-like projections that grow out from the cervical os. These are usually benign but can cause abnormal bleeding which can be distressing to women. They are usually easily removed.
  • Cervical cysts occur on the cervix and are usually benign. They are often filled with mucus or sebaceous material.
  • Cervicitis is an inflammation of the cervix, possibly from a vaginal infection and or an STD.
