When He Won't Change
Your Partner's Health Matters
By Amy Carey
What if all these tactics do nothing and your partner continues to light up, do drugs or create emotional turmoil in your life? "Then it is incumbent on you to take care of yourself," says Kamara. "Go get help. Seek therapy so that you can empower yourself to make decisions for your own wellness." Even if your partner refuses to attend counseling, going alone can help bolster your confidence and give you ways to cope with the problems you face with your partner.
Counseling may also help you assess the future of your relationship. "A woman in this situation might want to seriously consider whether she would like to have children with a man who would put his desire for a cigarette, a drink or a joint ahead of the health and well-being of his family," says Douglas.
If you do manage to conceive, leading a healthy lifestyle while pregnant will be crucial to your baby's development, and once he is born, your child will depend on you to provide a stable, smoke- and drug-free environment in which he can thrive.
Knowing that your health and the health of your future children is at stake should be motivation enough to try to make serious changes in your approach to reproduction health. Remember, your partner's behavior and habits are just as important as yours when trying to conceive. Seek the help you need to give your baby the best possible start.
