Low Carb Crazy
Bad News for Baby?
By Kelly Burgess
Dr. Licciardi is not shy about expressing his dislike of the current low-carb obsession. A resident of New York, he points out that waiters in restaurants no longer even bring bread to the table unless it's specifically requested because so many patrons are on low-carb diets. He even jokingly suggests that the smoking/non-smoking sections may be further subdivided into carb/no-carb sections.
All joking aside, while Donna Allen, a woman of childbearing age, has a crucial reason to be sure she's getting sufficient folic acid, her husband, Dave, is missing some of the nutrients' benefits, as well. Folic acid plays an important role in the production of normal red blood cells and may help prevent heart disease, stroke and certain cancers, especially colon cancer in both men and women.
Dr. Licciardi says that no one should embrace a diet that severely restricts any one type of food because it's a balance that's important. "What people need to do is monitor their sugar, fat and calorie intake while maintaining a three-meal-a-day schedule," says Dr. Licciardi. "If this type of reasonable, varied diet is followed, anyone will do fine both with their weight and their health."
For women who are definitely planning to conceive, choosing foods from the following list that are naturally high in folic acid will help insure a healthy baby:

- Fortified breakfast cereals
- Instant oatmeal
- Enriched breads and pasta
- Navy beans
- Orange juice, fortified
- Spinach
- Asparagus
- Black Beans
- Peanuts
- Avocado
- Green peas
- Romaine lettuce
- Broccoli
