Fanning the Flames
Keeping the Love Alive When You're Trying to Conceive
By Julie Watson
If you have been in the process of trying to conceive a child for sometime I'm sure you know how this feels, whether you currently have to do inseminations or not. Timed intercourse. Endless tests. Regimented treatment cycles. And possibly the worst of them all for your husband: "the room" at the lab! All of this "doing it only at predetermined times" can often set the pace for your love life and can take the spontaneity, which is paramount to ANY healthy love life, out of a meaningful relationship.
The Importance of a Strong Love Life
Maintaining an active love life is vital to any good marriage and absolutely necessary if you are tackling a fertility challenge. You will need to be a strong, solid unit once that baby arrives. So try not to let the act of trying to have a baby overshadow the already existing loving relationship that you and your spouse share. Add Some Spice
If timed intercourse or your treatment plan is taking a toll on your relationship, here are some suggestions on how to put the "oomph" back into your love life: - Mark the critical days on a calendar where abstinence and treatment is a must. Plan on doing something special for just the two of you the weekend before or after you ovulate. Rent a romantic movie. Go for a walk along a nearby river, lake or in the park. If you can afford to, book a night's stay in a fancy hotel, as close to your home as possible to minimize the stress oftraveling. Work this into your budget for trying for a baby. It's worth it!
