Helping Hands

Groups That Navigate the Infertility Roller Coaster

By Kelly Burgess

Diane Clapp has "walked the awful path." That's what she calls the journey through infertility and all its subsequent heartbreak, pain and questions. She now helps others through the emotional roller coaster of infertility as director of medical information for RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association. Founded in 1974 by a nurse who was experiencing infertility, RESOLVE helps people who are dealing with infertility by providing information and support groups.

"Infertility issues tend to be very isolating because infertility is invisible," says Clapp. "A lot of time, women and men who are going through it feel like they're kind of crazy or obsessed. When they go to a support group it makes them realize that these feelings are normal."

Information: The RESOLVE WAY

RESOLVE provides infertility support in a variety of ways. Emotional support comes in the form of two different types of classes. One is a 10- to 12-week-long, committed, weekly program with a professional leader. Because it's not a drop-in format, it's a more in-depth experience, and strong bonds tend to form between the attendees. The other class is peer-led and meets on a monthly or bi-monthly basis. Since this is a drop-in format, membership at the meetings varies, and the subjects are often topic-driven, such as coping with the holidays.

Some of the larger chapters of RESOLVE may even have specific groups devoted to a particular topic, such as multiple miscarriages. In addition to emotional support, RESOLVE provides important information about procedures and diagnoses for those who are new to or confused by the world of infertility.
