Egg Day

The Next Step Toward Conception

We made the switch to the predictor kit on the advice of our new doctor, the supervising physician at an infertility clinic. We chose this clinic, as it has had some success with intrauterine insemination (IUI) and because our insurance covered the services. Lots of other doctors recommended that we go right to IVF, but since that is not covered by our insurance and we do not have that kind of money right now, we thought we would start a little bit smaller and work our way up if we had to.

There were more tests, of course – most notably an HIV-test to ensure that they would not be contributing to the infection of my wife. There were also release forms that felt uncomfortably like permission slips to go on the sixth grade field trip. ("I, Mark, do hereby give you the permission to use my sperm and only my sperm to inseminate my wife, Charlotte, and only my wife. After insemination is complete, we will be going to the Museum of Natural History. Please bring a bag lunch and $5 for admission to the museum.") I'm glad Mom didn't have to sign these, that's for sure.

The doctor presented our choices and our chances to us very openly and honestly. I expected him to take a look at our file and find some reason why we were not going to be eligible for their program or good candidates for the procedure. As hopeful as I was trying to be, it is sometimes difficult to imagine that there is good news out there.
