Physician or Friend

Can Your Doctor Be Both?

I never had the opportunity to lose track of my gynecological health after I gave birth to my daughter. When I took her in for a weight check five days after giving birth, my family practice doctor, the one who delivered her, the one who was now her primary physician, gently reminded me that I needed to schedule a postpartum check.

After three kids, the pieces to the puzzle have finally fallen into place. It didn't matter so much who was providing my obstetric and gynecological care. What mattered most was how I viewed the whole process. I used to see women's health care as important only at certain times in my life – like the moment the test turned positive to the moment I pushed my baby into the world. I used to see my doctors and midwives as nameless professionals who would pass into and out of my life through revolving doors. I'm looking for something a little more long-term now.

Dr. Fox says it best: "If you choose the right doc, it's a lifelong relationship."
