  • Cough – Again, increasing humidity and drinking lots of water will help. According to Hastings, water is a natural expectorant. You could also try nonprescription cough drops to soothe your throat.
  • Fighting the Flu

If you'll be in your second or third trimester during flu season (December through March), you might consider getting the flu shot. "Women in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy are known to be at increased risk of complications from influenza," says Dr. William Atkinson of the National Immunization Program at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The March of Dimes recommends a preconception appointment with your doctor or midwife to talk about toxins your baby might be exposed to as a result of your job, your hobbies or any drugs you might be taking. Use the dialogue to your advantage. Like Dr. Mattison says, "That's also a good time to check with a provider about the common medications that they feel most comfortable using for treating common diseases like colds and flu."
